Morphological and textural diversity of the Steens Basalt lava flows, Southeastern Oregon, USA: implications for emplacement style and nature of eruptive episodes

Abstract: This study focuses on Middle Miocene tholeiitic flood basalt lava flows from the Oregon Plateau, northwestern USA (Steens Basalt), and is the first to comprehensively document and evaluate their morphology. Field observations of flows from several sections within and proximal to the main exposures at Steens Mountain have been supplemented with textural and geochemical data, and are used to offer preliminary insights into their emplacement. Compound pahoehoe flows of variable thickness appear to be common throu… Show more

“…Precaldera rocks are predominantly Steens Basalt (Tsb, Tb) and intermediate composition lavas (Tpi), which are extensively exposed around the northern half of the caldera and regionally ( Fig. 4B; Greene, 1972Greene, , 1976Brueseke et al, 2007;Bondre and Hart, 2008;Jarboe et al, 2010;Camp et al, 2013), along with numerous interbedded local to distal silicic lavas and tuffs. Erupted rocks generally became more silicic through time, although rhyolite lavas are locally interbedded with Steens Basalt low in the stratigraphic section.…”

“…Are the emplacement mechanisms inferred from young, small-volume systems applicable (e.g. Bondre and Hart 2008;Bondre et al 2004;Sheth 2006)? If so, what are the implications for vent distribution and magma supply?…”

“…In Deccan both pahoehoe and 0 a 0 a lavas where identified and innumerous examples of transitional flows, such as rubbly and slab pahoehoe, where also reported (Brown et al, 2011;Duraiswami et al, 2003Duraiswami et al, , 2013.…”
