Morphological characteristics and abundance of red meranti (Shorea platyclados) in Martelu Purba natural reserves

Abstract: Shorea platyclados Slooten ex Endert is a commercial timber-producing tree from the Dipterocarpaceae family, with the trade name red meranti. The distribution and abundance of Shorea species in Indonesia are decreasing due to forest conversion and illegal logging. As a result, this species is listed as endangered (EN) according to The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Therefore, conservation efforts become an urgent task for this species. This study was conducted to identify the morpho… Show more

“…Therefore, intensive security measures are needed by the Martelu Purba Nature Reserve manager, which should also involve the local community. The findings of this study differ from those of earlier investigations [9]. In 2021, most of the Dipterocarpaceae families in Southeast Asia had abundant flowering and fruiting, including S. platyclados in the Martelu Purba Nature Reserve.…”

“…The abundance of S. platyclados in its natural environment, the Martelu Purba Nature Reserve in North Sumatra, runs somewhat counter to the IUCN's assertion [9]. However, due to the unpredictable flowering phase and the resistive character of the seeds, this species experiences regeneration restrictions similar to those experienced by the Dipterocarpaceae family.…”

“…In other reserve areas, only one genus is found per family. These dominant families naturally dominate tropical rainforests in the Martelu Purba Nature Reserve [9] From the 39 identified tree species, the benefits of the trees are classified into six categories namely; 1. as a raw material for medicine, 2. a source of food for humans and animals, 3. improvement of environmental conditions, 4. heavy and light construction materials, 5. natural dyes, 6. and paper-making materials.…”

“…so much sought after because it is great potential for various kinds of basic building materials with a very high market value [1]. This type of meranti is unique because of the flat tips of the branches [2][3]. This meranti grows and is widespread in the hills or mountains between 700 to 1,300 meters above sea level [4].…”
