Morphological characteristics and biodiversity of mudskipper fish (Periophthalmus: Gobiidae) in mangrove ecosystem of coastal Bay of Tomini, Boalemo, Gorontalo Province, Indonesia

Abstract: Abstract. Baderan DWK, Aydalina RV, Hamidun MS. 2023. Morphological characteristics and biodiversity of mudskipper fish (Periophthalmus: Gobiidae) in mangrove ecosystem of coastal Bay of Tomini, Gorontalo Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 498-507. The southern sea area of Gorontalo Province is part of Tomini bay, the biggest bay in Indonesia. This area has a unique biodiversity and is Sulawesi endemic. The mangrove forest in the coastal bay of Tomini Boalemo is one of the habitats for flora and fauna, a p… Show more

“…Morphometric and meristics data were analyzed using the Microsoft Excel program version 2021, and morphological observations were analyzed descriptively. The data used Total length, Standard length, Head length, Caudal peduncle length, Snout length, Eye diameter, Caudal peduncle depth, Body depth, Pectoral fin length, Pelvic fin length, height of the longest first spiny dorsal fin, first dorsal fin base length, second dorsal fin base length, anal fin base length based on Baderan et al (2023). At the same time the gonad histology for both males and females was analyzed descriptively according to DoNascimento et al (2017).…”

“…Barred mudskipper Periophthalmus argentilineatus Valenciennes, 1837 (Osteichthyes: Oxudercinae) were chosen as a model species due to their widespread distribution in estuarine mangroves in the region and their strong affinity to mangroves (Heemstra et al., 2022). Their movements beyond these areas are usually confined to the immediate intertidal zones or adjacent areas (Baderan et al., 2023), rendering them highly vulnerable to alterations in the mangroves. Given vast expenses of mangroves in the region are reportedly been lost in previous years, there is a potential that their populations have been heavily impacted.…”
