Morphological characterization of chicken anaemia agent (CAA)

Abstract: Chicken anaemia agent (CAA) was characterized as a virion with 25 nm in diameter, with a buoyant density in CsCl of 1.36-1.37 g/cm3, and containing a circular, single-stranded DNA genome. The virus is composed of 32 hollow morphological units representing a regular T = 3 icosahedron.

“…An earlier study of negatively stained preparations of the three viruses showed CAV to have a larger diameter (19.1 to 26.5 nm) than PCV-1 (16.8 to 20.7 nm) or BFDV (14 to 20.7 nm) (20). CAV also has a more distinctive surface morphology, which was interpreted visually to indicate a Tϭ3 surface lattice with 32 hexamer-pentamer clustered morphological units (8,11). Here we calculated three-dimensional maps from unstained cryopreserved specimens of CAV and PCV-2 and from a negatively stained specimen of BFDV.…”

“…Dual infections, however, are more serious and result in the development of aggravated clinical signs associated with other viruses (Yuasa et al, 1980;von Bulow et al, 1986;Engstrom et al, 1988;Rosenberger & Cloud, 1989a,b;De Boer et al, 1989;Jeurissen & De Boer, submitted). Gelderblom et al (1989) and Todd et al (1990a) have demonstrated that CAV particles contain circular single-stranded DNA. Recently, we have cloned a 2.3-kb circular DNA from CAV-infected chicken lymphoblastoid cell lines.…”

“…It was first isolated in Japan (Yuasa et al, 1979) and as yet remains unclassified. Recent work has shown that CAA is an icosahedral, non-enveloped virus, about 25 nm in diameter, which possesses a singlestranded circular DNA 2.3 kb in size (McNulty et al, 1989;Gelderblom et al, 1989;Todd et al, 1990).…”
