Morphological characterization of Cysticercus cellulosae in naturally infected pigs in Punjab (India)

Abstract: Porcine cysticercosis is an important medical and veterinary concern in the developing world. The present study was carried out to determine the morphological characteristics of Cysticercus cellulosae, so as to differentiate the C. viscerotropica (larval form of T. asiatica) which is having only rudimentary hooks on their rostellum. Morphological analysis was conducted on 22 Cysticercus positive samples. Measurements for number of hooks (large and small), the total length and blade length of large and small ho… Show more

“…Histomorphologically, there are few significant differentiating features to classify these subspecies. The most easily recognizable feature is that C. cellulosae can have 22-32 small and large hooklets, whereas C. bovis (the larval form of T. saginata ) can have none and C. viscerotropica (larval form of T. asiatica) will have only rudimentary hooks ( 13 , 14 ).…”

“…with 70% alcohol again, for a few minutes. Then the cysts were dehydrated in 90% alcohol for 1 h, then placed in xylene and mounted in Canada balsam (Chawhan et al, 2014). Nine measurements were included for morphometric analysis of the small and large rostellar hooks, according to Haukisalmi et al (2011), Fig.…”
