The synthesis of two (2) novel triblock terpolymers of the ABC type and one (1) of the BAC type, where A, B and C are chemically different segments, such as polystyrene (PS), poly(butadiene) (PB1,4) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), is reported; moreover, their corresponding molecular and bulk characterizations were performed. Very low dimensions are evident from the characterization in bulk from transmission electron microscopy studies, verified by small-angle X-ray data, since sub-16 nm domains are evident in all three cases. The self-assembly results justify the assumptions that the high Flory–Huggins parameter, χ, even in low molecular weights, leads to significantly well-ordered structures, despite the complexity of the systems studied. Furthermore, it is the first time that a structure/properties relationship was studied for such systems in bulk, potentially leading to prominent applications in nanotechnology and nanopatterning, for as low as sub-10 nm thin-film manipulations.

A novel planet‐like nanostructure formed by an asymmetric polystyrene‐block‐polyisoprene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (SIM) triblock terpolymer is presented, where polystyrene (PS) forms spherical microdomains, covered by polyisoprene (PI) rings/helices/polar caps and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) forms the matrix. The new nanostructure is the result of a thermally induced morphological transition of a kinetically trapped helical nanostructure by thermal annealing above its glass transition temperature. This new nanostructure is observed when the triblock terpolymer solution is cast from chloroform (CHCl3). When cast from tetrahydrofuran (THF) or toluene, mainly cylindrical and to a lesser extent spherical microdomains are observed. This is caused by a selectivity of the CHCl3 for the PS and PMMA microdomains. The SIM triblock terpolymer is synthesized by anionic polymerization, and the morphology is characterized by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and small angle X‐ray scattering.

Block copolymers (BCPs) provide a versatile platform for the formation of various nanostructures. Among them, ABC-type BCPs have great potential to form complex structures, which may have promising applications in nanotechnology. However, the self-assembly behavior of ABC-type BCPs is still not well understood because of its complexity, especially about the formation of complex structures that are difficult to be assumed from AB-type BCPs. In this paper, we propose a useful rule to systematically assume ordered structures possibly formed by ABC-type BCPs. We hypothetically change an AB-type BCP to an ABC-type architecture by replacing the ending portion of each free B block with a C block, to see how the C blocks separate from the ordered structure preformed by the AB-type BCP. We propose that the C domains firstly aggregate at the vertices of the Voronoi cell of the precursory AB-type structures to form spheres, then along the edges to form struts, and finally on the faces to form layers. Accordingly, we have obtained a large number of ABC-type structures, some of which are very complex and have not been reported before. The validity of the assumption rule is testified by using self-consistent field theory to determine the stability of some assumed structures. This rule can serve as a useful guide for the exploration of interesting novel structures in ABC-type BCPs. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
