Morphological features of 52 cases of breast phyllodes tumours with local recurrence

Abstract: Typical phyllodes tumours (PTs) of the breast are fibroepithelial neoplasms characterised histologically by stromal hypercellularity and leaf-like structures. However, morphological changes may be atypical in some cases, increasing the difficulty of diagnosis and the likelihood of misdiagnosis. To provide more morphological clues for pathological diagnosis of PTs, we retrospectively analysed 52 PT cases with typical morphological features after recurrence, and summarized the clinicopathological characteristics… Show more

“…A malignant phyllodes tumor of the breast consists of pleomorphic spindle-shaped tumor cells that often show a mucinous matrix [ 17 , 18 ]. Diagnosis is relatively easy to obtain when the tumor contains a non-neoplastic epithelial component.…”

“…This is not surprising as the histomorphology of benign phyllodes and fibroadenoma are very similar such that it may be challenging distinguishing one entity from the other. 19,20 Some researchers believe the lesions share common genetic background. 21 As shown in our study, benign phyllodes tend to be found in younger patients compared with their malignant counterparts.…”
