Morphological Structures of Historical Turkish Cities

Abstract: In this study, morphological structures of the traditional fabrics of cities in Turkey, which have been shaped under the influence of various different cultures and geographical and climatic conditions in the historical process are presented via a mathematical interpretation. In this scope, spatial configuration and morphological structures of the historical cores of a total of fourteen cities selected from the seven geographical regions of Turkey, two cities from each (from the Marmara Region, Edirne and Burs… Show more

“…Axial synergy is achieved by comparing the structure of each space to itself and to the whole plan. It measures the relationship between local and global integration (Topçu, 2019). If the spatial axial synergy of a plan is high, it means that there is no spatial separation and no physical boundaries between spaces contributing to a well-structured plan.…”

“…Synergy is similar to intelligibility. The concept of synergy, like the parameter of intelligebility, has been defined as a second-degree value emerging as a result of correlation (Topçu, 2019). The connection between the global value of integration and the value of local integration explains the city's synergy (Thilagam, 2015).…”

“…The daily use of the urban space affected by morphology as well as social, cultural, and temporal parameters. Space syntax is used to understand the city's socio-spatial structure (Charalambous, 2020;Topçu, 2019;Topcu & Kubat, 2012) and the the formation of the urban feature (Sakar & Ünlü, 2019) by revealing the structure of urban configuration that has evolved. Space syntax method applied to the urban squares (Arruda Campos, 1997Campos, , 2000Major et al, 1999Major et al, , 2000Safari & Moridani, 2017;Yılmaz Çakmak & Topçu, 2018) reveals the daily rhythms and provides comprehensive data such as areas suitable for social interaction, accessibility level, pedestrian and vehicle traffic density, isolated areas, visible areas, and the visibility level of spaces.…”
