Morphological Study of the Lingual Papillae in the Barking deer, Muntiacus muntjak

Abstract: The morphology of the tongue of the adult barking deer, Muntiacus muntjak, was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. The result showed that the tongue of the barking deer was elongated with a rounded apex. Four types of lingual papillae were observed: filiform, fungiform, vallate and large conical papillae. The filiform papillae represented the most numerous types of lingual papillae. The fungiform papillae were distributed among the filiform papillae on the rostral and the body portions of the t… Show more

“…The fungiform papillae were more densely distributed on the tip and ventral surface of the lingual apex in the study, as to Japanese serow (Funato et al), Formosan serow (Atoji et al), Blackbuck (Emura et al, 1999) and Barbary sheep (Emura et al, 2000). The appearance of the taste on fungiform papilla at x650 magnifications similar to some articles (Kullaa-Mikkonen & Sorvari, 1985;Adnyane et al, 2011;Ates et al, 2013). But it was not seen in other studies (Steflik et al; Dyce et al).…”

“…Micro-pits systems, which were reported (Kumar et al, 1998;Adnyane et al) in the filiform and lentiform papillae were determined on the surface of the lentiform papillae the borders of the cells and the micro-pitted patterns in this study at x2000 magnification.…”

“…In our study with B. variegatus the presence of a median sulcus of the tongue was noted, which was extended from the tongue's root to the apex, disagreeing with findings by Benetti et al (2009) after morphological post-evaluation of three-toed sloth (Bradypus torquatus), where the authors described the presence of a median sulcus of the tongue, restricted only to the rostral part of the tongue, as well as described by Jackowiak (2006) in the European mole and in deer by Adnyane et al (2010).…”

“…The lenticular papillae were restricted to the lingual prominence, similar to other ruminants, roan antelope, and sitatunga (Emura et al, 2011a,b). There are no lenticular papillae in the lingual prominence of reeves filiform papillae, barking deer, or mazama species (Zheng and Kobayashi, 2006;Adnyane et al, 2011;Kokubun et al, 2012). The conical and lenticular papillae aid mastication and the movement of food inside the buccal cavity and may be related to the need for physical mastication of plant material.…”
