Morphology and crystallization kinetics of polyethylene/long alkyl-chain substituted Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes (POSS) nanocomposite blends: A SAXS/WAXS study

Abstract: The dispersal, quiescent crystallization kinetics and morphology of a series of unique polyethylene -polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (PE-POSS) nanocomposite blends is presented. POSS molecules with long linear alkyl-chain substituents were blended at one composition into a commercial low density polyethylene. Time-resolved Small-and WideAngle X-Ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) and thermal techniques were used to elucidate the affect that POSS and its substituent groups have on the dispersal and crystallization… Show more

“… demonstrated for PP/POSS composites, that the presence of long alkyl substituents in the octakis(alkyl)octasilsesquioxane molecules enhanced filler dispersion. A beneficial effect of long alkyl‐chain substituted silsesquioxane fillers in the polyolefin matrix was also described by other authors .…”

“…However, in the case of the polyolefin composites, POSS fillers with relatively short alkyl substituents (from methyl to iso ‐octyl) on the silicon‐oxygen core were mainly used . Long alkyl chain groups, when attached to the POSS cage, are expected to ensure better compatibility with the polyolefin matrix and thus this could result in the desirable improvement of properties of the prepared composite materials. However, the number of reports related to the materials with POSS which contain long n ‐alkyl chain substituents (from n ‐octyl to n ‐octadecyl) is still limited .…”

“…X‐ray diffraction methods are commonly used to analyze the crystalline structures of composite materials . Moreover, they have been also proved to be very useful in determination of filler dispersion in the case of polymer matrix composites containing the 2D layered fillers or other crystalline fillers , including POSS molecules . Another widely used tool to investigate homogeneity of polymer composites is assessment of rheological and/or viscoelastic properties.…”

“…However, it should be mentioned that the papers published to date covered mainly the properties of polyolefin/POSS nanocomposites which contained POSS molecules with relatively short alkyl chain substituents (from methyl to iso-octyl) [20][21][22][25][26][27][28][29][30]. Only few papers related to nanocomposites with long alkyl chain substituents (from n-octyl to n-octadecyl) on the T 8 POSS core [31,32] and most of those studies focused on PP/POSS [20-22, 25, 28-30] and LDPE/POSS [26,27,31,32] nanocomposites, while studies on HDPE/POSS nanocomposites were limited [33].…”
