Morphology and structure of silica agglomerates in silica‐reinforced silicone rubber

Abstract: SynopsisLight-scattering and optical microscope observations of silica-reinforced silicone rubber have shown that the filler is dispersed in a complex manner. Much of the original material appears agglomerated into particles several microns in size. These particles apparently further cluster to form agglomerates of about 20 p in diameter. I n an earlier paper in this series it was shown that the thermodynamic function fe/f (the fraction of the retractive force due to internal energy changes) was a measure of t… Show more

“…From electron microscopy studies it is known that the filler aggregates (about 5 pm) can form agglomerates of about 20 pm in diameter [25]. The samples were based on linear (non-crosslinked) PDMS (qsp = 450.000) and Aerosil A300 (specific surface = 286 m2/g), mixed by milling.…”

“…Silicone rubber has been widely applied in many industrial products because of its excellent properties, such as high flexibility, heat resistance, electrical insulation, water resistance, and weather resistance. Silica particles are filled into silicone rubber to improve its mechanical properties, especially the strength and elastic modulus (Yatsuyanagi et al, 2001;Salvi et al, 2002;Gauthier et al, 2004;Patwardhan et al, 2006;Galanti and Sperling, 1970;Vondráček and Schätz, 1979;Zhang et al, 2011;Yan et al, 2015). In this study, we examined the linear elastic behavior of silicone rubbers filled with micro-and nano-silica particles on the basis of experimental results and theoretical analysis.…”

“…Silica particles are used to fill silicone rubber to improve its mechanical properties, especially strength, and elastic modulus. The mechanical properties of silicone rubbers filled with silica particles have been investigated . However, the effect of the filling silicone rubbers with nanosilica particles on deformation properties has not been clarified.…”
