Morphology, Genome Organization, Replication, and Pathogenesis of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)

Abstract: SARS-CoV-2 is a single-stranded RNA virus of~30 kb genome size which belongs to genus Coronavirus and family Coronaviridae. SARS-CoV-2 has recently emerged and has been declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization. Genomic characterization of SARS-CoV-2 has shown that it is of zoonotic origin. The structure of SARS-CoV-2 is found to be similar to SARS-CoV with virion size ranging from 70 to 90 nm. Spike, membrane, and envelope surface viral proteins of coronavirus are embedded in host membrane-deriv… Show more

“…The understanding of COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2 is at an early stage. Much research is still needed in various areas such as viral transmission, 93 disease progression, differential clinical diagnosis, 94 laboratory diagnosis, 95 antigenic 96 pathogenicity, 97 epitopes, immunogenic kinetics, 98 drugs, immunotherapeutic products, 99 prevention, and control strategies, 100,101 cell-based therapy, 102 phytotherapy, 103 and clinical trials of plasma transfusion. Recently, the potential targets of the immune response to SARS-CoV-2 were predicted by comparison to SARS-CoV.…”

“…After viral replication and before the viral release, the spikes budding from the Golgi apparatus to cell membrane and the ribonucleic core start to evolved out-side with this S-rich membrane. Not microscopical evidence of this nal stage was proved for SARS-CoV-2, but following its similarity with SARS-CoV, this characteristic has been assumed (8).…”

“…The envelope-anchored spike protein guides coronavirus entry into host cells. This state of the spike on the mature virions is called "prefusion" (1,(8)(9)(10). After viral replication and before the viral release, the spikes budding from the Golgi apparatus to cell membrane and the ribonucleic core start to evolved out-side with this S-rich membrane.…”

“…As hopes for effective treatment and/or a vaccine rise every day, we are aiming here to contribute to the global goal of attaining effective treatment. Coronaviruses are enveloped, single-stranded, positive-sense ribonucleic acid (RNA) viruses that belong to the family Coronaviridae [2]. SARS-CoV-2 size usually ranges 70 -90 nm, as shown in Figure 1, it consists of the surface viral protein spike, membrane, and envelope of coronavirus are embedded in the host membrane-derived lipid bilayer encapsulating the helical nucleocapsid comprising viral RNA [2].…”
