Morphology of spermathecae of some pentatomids (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) from Turkey

Abstract: The spermathecal morphology of nine species belonging to the Pentatomidae (Insecta: Heteroptera) were compared by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Among the examined species [Rhaphigaster nebulosa (Poda 1761), Palomena prasina (Linnaeus 1761), Piezodorus lituratus (Fabricius 1794), Graphosoma lineatum (Linnaeus 1758), Graphosoma semipunctatum (Fabricius 1775), Aelia albovittata (Fieber 1868), Codophila varia (Fabricius 1787), Ancyrosoma leucogrammes (Gmelin 1790), Nezara viridula (Linnaeus 1758)… Show more

“…As eggs pass through the common oviduct they are fertilized by sperm contained within the spermatheca, which is part of an elaborate spermathecal complex. The spermathecal complex in B. hilaris is similar to other pentatomids (Candan et al 2015, Souza et al 2015). It arises from the medial or distal portion of the common oviduct via the spermathecal duct (Figs.…”

“…Spermathecal ducts are region of the sperm transport system, they are responsible for sperm can be transported directly from the spermathecae to the common oviduct (Puchkova, 1959). The two ring sclerites presence within the genital chamber are common to all species of Pentatomidae previously studied (Javahery, 1994;Candan et al, , 2015. Based on our study, morphological characters of eggs and spermathecae of S. coloratum can be useful in the classification of Pentatomidae.…”

“…In some taxa, they are essentially straight; in others they can be very coiled. Also, sometimes there is a swelling or enlargement just below the proximal flange (Javahery, 1994;Candan et al, , 2015. In this SEM study, the distal spermathecal duct and the proximal spermathecal are almost the same length, and muscular structures.…”

“…Publications by Kumar (1962, 1965) and McDonald (1966) were the first to indicate the importance of the female genital structures (including spermatheca) for classification and phylogeny in Pentatomoidea. This was confirmed later for most of the pentatomoid families (Servadei 1964; Štys 1964; Štys and Davidová 1979; Davidová-Vilimová and Štys 1980; Schaefer et al 1988; Gapud 1991; Kim and Lee 1993, 1995; Schaefer 1993; Kocorek and Danielczok-Demska 2002; Sweet and Schaefer 2002; Pluot-Sigwalt and Lis 2008; Stacconi and Romani 2011; Candan et al 2015).…”
