Morphology of Spontaneous Brain Tumors in the Rat

Abstract: Abstract. In lifespan studies of 2,242 rats of three strains, 32 neoplasms were identified in brain, meninges and pineal gland. They were astrocytoma ( 16 Wistar, three Sprague-Dawley), ependymoma (four Osborne-Mendel), meningioma (two Osborne-Mendel, one Wistar), pinealoma (two Osborne-Mendel), reticulosis (two Wistar), oligodendroglioma (one Wistar), and gliomatosis (one Wistar). There has been a renaissance of interest in brain tumors of laboratory animals with the realization that exogenous and, perhaps, en… Show more

“…In the past 15 yr, there have been a few more reports on spontaneous brain neoplasms in rats where the incidences varied broadly from < 1 to 10-12%, with incidence in males greater than in females. Brain neoplasms in rats are clearly not as rare as first reported but generally have an incidence between 0.5 and 3.0%, depending on the rat strain and sex being reported (3,7,(9)(10)(11)(12). There were no histological variants of astrocytoma in this series consistent with spontaneous &dquo;glioblastoma multiforme,&dquo; as reported elsewhere (15).…”

“…The spontaneous incidence of brain neoplasms among laboratory rats found in the pre-1976 literature was < 1 % (9). Since then, a few more reports have established that the incidence in laboratory rats varies but ranges from < 1 to about 3% (3,(5)(6)(7)12 (Fig. 3a, b).…”
