MORPHOLOGY OF THE IMMATURE STAGES OF DACUS TRYONI (FROGGATT) (DIPTERA: TEPHRITIDAE)

Abstract: External features of the puparium, larvae and egg of the Queensland fruit fly, Ducur (Bactrocera) tryoni (Froggatt) were studied by scanning electron microscopy and significant morphological characters are described and illustrated. Cephalopharyngeal skeletons are described from examination by light microscopy.

“…The external and internal morphology of B. tryoni immature stages have been well characterised (Exley, 1955;Anderson, 1962Anderson, , 1963aAnderson, ,b, 1964aElson-Harris, 1988). “…Following oviposition, the larvae can spend up to 4 weeks feeding and developing in fruit. The external and internal morphology of B. tryoni immature stages have been well characterised (Exley, 1955;Anderson, 1962Anderson, , 1963aAnderson, ,b, 1964aElson-Harris, 1988). Larval development rate and success varies between fruit species and is affected by fruit maturity, but this has only been tested on a limited range of host fruits.…”

“…The physiological maturation times for first, second, and third instar was previously determined in larvae fed natural and artificial diets by dissecting 50 individuals per day. Physiological maturity was determined based on cephalopharyngeal skeleton development ( Elson-Harris 1988 ) using a stereoscope (BestScope BLM-340, International Limited; Beijing, China).…”
