Urolithiasis is a nutritional disease that affects domestic carnivores. Past and recent literature on urolithiasis was reviewed for information on anatomical occurrence, physiology of urine formation, prevalence, mineral composition, clinical signs, laboratory findings, dissolution therapy, surgery and prevention of urolithiasis. The acquired knowledge of complexed and multifaceted urolithiasis is a tremendous achievement towards the treatment and control of the disease. However, eradication of the disease is the most challenging as it requires total overhaul of all the factors that are responsible for the formation of uroliths.

The application of infrared and Raman spectroscopic techniques to the analysis of urinary calculi is reviewed and their relative efficiency and adaptability to routine analysis are discussed. Using the classification of urinary calculi based on their main constituents, infrared and Raman spectra of calcium oxalates, phosphates, uric acid, urates, and cystine are reported. Some characteristic bands are suggested as useful for analytical purposes. References to other constituents such as drugs are included. Although this review is aimed principally at human stones, it also extends to literature references dealing with urinary calculi from canine, feline, and equine animal species. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) formation on the semi-batch precipitation of CaCI, and Na2C20, solutions in the stoichiometric ratio carried out at pH = 6 and 37 or 70 "C, respectively, was studied. When a certain level of supersaturation in the system is reached, individual COM crystals of a rather uniform size are formed. These crystals then grow and form 'loose' agglomerates that later develop into compact and spherical particles. The particle size distribution (PSD) rapidly shifts during early stages of precipitation towards larger sizes as a result of crystal growth and agglomeration. Later the PSD reaches a shape and position on the size axis that remain virtually constant with progressing precipitation. COM agglomerates consisting of mainly intergrown crystals are formed by mechanism of primary and secondary agglomeration. The primary agglomeration can constitute an important factor in urolithiasis.
