Morphometric Analysis of some Species in the Genus Vigna (L.) Walp: Implication for Utilization for Genetic Improvement

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThe genus Vigna (L.) Walp is a large cosmopolitan leguminous genus comprising both cultivated and wild species. Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. (Cowpea) is an important food legume that is widely cultivated in the tropics, but its production and storage are hampered by insect pests. The present study evaluated the intra-and inter-specific morphological variabilities among 20 accessions of six Vigna species, comprising wild and cultivated species. The species are Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp, V. vexi… Show more

“…On the other hand the lowest mean value for 100 -seed weight and total seed weight was observed in accession TVNu539. Similar mean values for seed parameters in species of wild Vigna have been reported by Popoola et al [42]. Wild relatives of the subsp.…”

“…Using different types of cameras also allowed us to collect a huge amount of data variables, of which only a subset was used in the present analysis. With this study, we have shown that high-throughput phenotyping can also aid screening of wild genotypes, which are generally much more variable in terms of plant size and growth habit (Popoola et al, 2015) as compared to varieties within a single species. Within-subgenus and between-subgenus variation in drought tolerance was large in our study, but nonetheless groups of accessions with similar drought tolerances could be delimited.…”

“…The genus Vigna savi is one of the most important genera among all the pulse crops, containing more than 200 domesticated and wild species ( Pratap et al, 2015 ). Wild Vigna species possess a high potential for utilization as human food and fodder for animals ( Popoola et al, 2015 ). Some of them are already utilized as human food, for example, V. marina (Burm.)…”
