Morphometric Study of Pedicles of Lumbar Vertebrae in Southern India

Abstract: The growing interest in transpedicular screw fixation in the present time has warranted improved knowledge in morphometric details of the pedicles. The key to successful surgery is a clear knowledge of intracanal anatomy and the location of the pedicle. OBJECTIVES: To estimate and compare width and Height of pedicles of typical and atypical lumbar vertebra. To estimate and compare interpedicular distance of typical and atypical lumbar vertebra. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 119 dry human lumbar vertebrae of undetermin… Show more

“…2 The variability in width, height, orientation and interpedicular distance makes pedicle screw insertion very challenging. 3 For a successful surgery and appropriate implant design, sufficient knowledge of lumbar vertebral pedicle morphometry and anatomical data is critical in order to avoid inadvertent penetration of the pedicle wall. 4 The anatomy of the lumbar pedicle has been extensively studied previously using cadavers, dry bones and different imaging techniques; however, wide regional variations has been noted.…”

“…Pedicle screw fixation is a method of spine stabilization. It gives rigid, segmental stabilization and also allows maintenance of motion 3 . Therefore, having sharp knowledge the pedicle dimensions is noteworthy for performing a safe surgery 11 .…”

“…The authors mentioned that, load has to pass through the pedicles against gravity at L5 level 7,19,28 . Therefore, the transfer of load from the body to the laminae in L5 will be upwards against gravity, making L5 possess the strongest pedicles with maximum thickness 3 . In the present study also the thickness of pedicles is maximum at L5 level on both sides and in both genders.…”

“…Thus detailed knowledge about the pedicle size and dimensions is required while using the pedicle. 7 Fracture of the pedicle may occur due to the use of relatively oversized screw. Thus minimum diameter of the pedicle is required for the choice of the screw. Thus accurate anatomical knowledge of the morphometry of vertebral pedicle are also important for preoperative procedure planning and in the design and manufacture of pedicle screws.…”
