Morphometry of Asian House Shrew (Suncus murinus) in Jahangirnagar University Campus

Abstract: A study was conducted on morphometry of Asian House Shrew, Suncus murinus at Jahangirnagar University campus, Savar, Dhaka from December, 2010 to November, 2011. A total of 85 shrews (55 males and 30 females) were studied for morphometric analysis. The body length of shrews varied from 13cm to 18 cm (mean 15.36, sd±1.17). Males were significantly differed from females in size which made them sexually dimorphic (t = 10.02, df = 83, p< 0.005). The body length of males ranged from 14.5 cm to 18 cm (mean = 16, … Show more

“…The eruption and wears of the molar teeth were used to determine the age of the specimens (Voss and Marcus 1992). Moreover, the mammary glands in females and the penis in males served as the indicators of the sexes of B. bengalensis (Shoma et al 2015). The Animal Ethics Review Board (AERB) of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Chittagong [Reference number-AERB-FBSCU-20230202-(2)] has provided ethical approval for conducting this study.…”

“…Sexes were determined by the presence of mammary glands in females and penis in males (Shoma et al, 2015). The age of each specimen was verified based on the eruption and wear of the molar teeth (Carleton and Musser, 1989;Voss and Marcus, 1992).…”

“…The house shrew (S. murinus) has morphological characteristics in the form of a pointed snout and a gray body color, with a size of about 1.5 times larger than that of mice (Liat 2015). According to Shoma et al 2016, shrew body size is controlled by genes and environmental factors (temperature, geography, geoecology, and isolation). The body length of the shrew is about 130-180 mm, with a tail length of 75-120 mm and a head 32-42 mm.…”
