Background Mosquito-borne pathogens are important causes of diseases in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Knowledge of the mosquito fauna is needed for the appropriate control of the vectors that transmit the pathogens and prevent the diseases they cause. An important first step is to have an up-to-date list of the species known to be present in the country. Original occurrence records were obtained from published literature and critically scrutinized to compile a list of the mosquito species that occur within the borders of the Kingdom. Results Fifty-one species have been recorded in the Kingdom; however, the occurrence of two of these species is unlikely. Thus, the mosquito fauna of the Kingdom comprises 49 species that include 18 anophelines and 31 culicines. Published records are provided for each species. Problematic records based on misidentifications and inappropriate sources are discussed and annotated for clarity. Conclusion Integrated morphological and molecular methods of identification are needed to refine the list of species and accurately document their distributions in the Kingdom.

Aedes aegypti is considered a major dengue virus transmitter in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The present study was performed to investigate the prevalence of Ae. aegypti aquatic larvae in Jazan Governorate, KSA, as well as the influence of breeding water temperature and potential hydrogen (pH) on its abundance. Six locations in Jazan Governorate were surveyed monthly from January to December 2021. According to the data co llected, the highest numbers of collected Ae. aegypti larvae (185 and 183) were recorded in January and December from Jizan city, and the lowest numbers of collected larvae (31 and 32) were recorded in May and April from Damad and Ahad Almsarehah cities, respectively. The period from March to June showed the lowest recorded prevalence all over the studied sites. Overall, Ae. aegypti larvae recorded the highest prevalence in Jizan city during all months of the study, as compared with other surveyed locations. On the other hand, the lowest water temperature recorded in Jizan City was 24.3±0.4°C in January month. The highest water temperature recorded in Abu Arish city (30.2±0.2°C) was in May, respectively. While in Sabya City, the water temperature varied from 25.3±0.4 to 30.3±0.6°C during the entire study period. Damad City recorded water temperatures at 25.3±0.5 and 29.5±0.3°C in January and July. In addition, the highest water temperature recorded in Ahad EL Masarihah city (31.8±0.1°C) was in July. Moreover, no major differences were found (P>0.05) in the recorded pH values among different months of the study for all surveyed locations. Generally, Ae. aegypti has a remarkable prevalence in Jazan Governorate, KSA, throughout all months of the year, and temperature is a reliable factor in its abundance.

Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) is one of the most prevalent mosquitoes particularly in the Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah region, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, transmitting numerous diseases such as arboviruses, avian malaria, elephantiasis, dirofilariasis, and encephalitis. Worldwide, Culex pipiens has developed resistance to numerous insecticides; therefore, considerable efforts have been done to introduce new mosquito control candidates. Due to their unique physical, biological, and eco-friendly properties, ionic liquids (ILs) have been recently considered as promising agents in controlling a variety of organisms. Six aminopyridinium-based ionic liquids (IL1-IL6) were assayed against eggs and pupae of C. pipiens. Percentages of non-hatched eggs, nonemerged pupae, the lethal concentrations (LC 50 and LC 90) of both C. pipiens eggs and pupae were recorded. after exposure, to different ILs. The effects of ILs against eggs and pupae were concentration and IL-dependant. The percentages of egg unhatchability were much higher than those of pupal mortality, as the percentage of egg unhatchability reached 99% after treatment with IL6 at 0.5 g/L, while the percentage of pupal mortality reached 40.8% after treatment with IL4 at 0.5 g/L. The LC 50 and LC 90 of ILs against pupae were much higher than those of ILs against eggs. Effects of ILs on Staphylococcus aureus (Bacillales: Staphylococcaceae) and Escherichia coli (Entrobacterales: Entrobacteriaceae) were also studied; some ILs showed a considerable effect on both bacteria species. This is the first study to show the ovicidal, pupicidal, and bactericidal effects of aminopyridinium-based ILs in controlling C. pipiens, S. aureus, and E. coli.
