⎯The results of investigations of Upper Vendian-Lower Cambrian deposits in the northeastern part of the Baltic monocline specify views on the evolution of depositional environments of sedimentary successions constituting the basal part of the sedimentary cover in inner areas of the northwestern East European Platform. It is shown that the Late Vendian and initial Cambrian were characterized by the consecutive influx of relatively mature terrigenous detrital material that originated from both the weathering crust of the Baltic Shield and new sources. Its deposition was interrupted by notable, although likely asynchronous, hiatuses, which are registered at the base of the Upper Vendian Vasileostrovskaya and Voronkovo formations and Lower Cambrian Lomonosov Formation. In the Late Vendian, sedimentary material was transported from the Baltic Shield, while beginning from the initial Early Cambrian the additional contribution to the formation of the sedimentary cover of the Baltic monocline was provided by coarse-grained sedimentary material from the Timan margin of the Baltica as follows from U-Pb isotopic ages obtained for detrital zircons. At the same time, lithogeochemical parameters of fine-grained rocks experienced no substantial changes.

87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios are widely used to identify strontium sources and study strontium behaviour in(bio)geochemical cycles. 87Sr/86Sr in surface waters can reflect the average composition of bioavailable (i.e. available forfurther absorption by plants and animals) strontium in the catchment specific area. Based on those 87Sr/86Sr ratios, theregional maps of the bioavailable strontium distribution (strontium isoscapes) can be compiled. A complex block structurecharacterizes the Ural mountain system. Individual parts (blocks) are composed of rocks of various ages, genesis andgeochemical characteristics, which can radically change at a distance of several tens of kilometres. Such variability wouldbe reflected in strontium isotopic ratios, thus making it possible to determine the local isotopic signatures of bioavailablestrontium.This work aimed to study 87Sr/86Sr in the water in the rivers of the Southern Urals. We determined the contents andisotopic ratios of strontium in river water samples collected from the territories of the Orenburg and Chelyabinsk regionsand the Republic of Bashkortostan in 2019–2020.For the first time in the surface water of the rivers in the Southern Urals (Ural, Belaya, Tobol, Karagaily-Ayat, Sim, andothers), the 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios have been determined, and their variations have been analyzed. 87Sr/86Sr values varyin the range 0.70666–0.71063 (average 0.70908) for the rivers of the Urals basin, 0.70749–0.71058 (average 0.70924)for the Kama-Volga basin, 0.70946–0.71176 (average 0.71071) for the Tobol basin. Such features of the strontium isotopiccomposition may be due to the influence of underlying rocks of the catchment area drained by river water. The dataobtained can be used to identify the sources of strontium input into the water system during hydrological and environmentalstudies; to confirm the authenticity of food products of plant and animal origin; to carry out comparisons in thestudies of the migration of ancient people and animals, as well as to determine the raw material areas for the productionof vegetable and woollen textiles and wooden products in antiquity.

Lithological characteristics and results of the lithofacies analysis of carbonate deposits in the most complete section of the Upper Uk Subformation of the Riphean stratotype (northern part of the Bashkir Anticlinorium, southern Urals) are presented. The subformation is divided into the following members or sequences (from the bottom to top): Yuryuzan, Medved I, Manaysu, and Medved II. The subformation bottom occurs at the base of a huge stromatolite buildup. The Yuryuzan member is characterized by the thincolumnar branching stromatolites Patomella. The Medved I and Medved II members are represented mainly by bioherms consisting of the columnar-branching stromatolites Linella, interbiohermal rocks, and local packets of layered granular limestones found only in the lower member). The Manaysu member comprises layered (mainly cyclic) deposits with abundant molar tooth (MT) structures. The growth of the Yuryuzan member stromatolites occurred most likely in the upper subtidal-peritidal zone within the inner carbonate ramp under the influence of siliciclastic-bearing currents. Stromatolite buildups in Medved I and Medved II members were formed as a part of wide facies belts below the normal wave base (inner/middle ramp boundary) but within the photic zone. Layered limestones in the Medved I member are periodic storm current deposits. Environments of the inner ramp and upper middle ramp dominated during the deposition of Manaysu sediments with signatures of the influence of normal and storm waves. The sequence including the upper part of the Lower Uk Subformation, as well as the Yuryuzan and Medved I members of the Upper Uk Subformation, reflects a progressive deepening of the basin. The later slowdown in the rate of sea level rise (or fall) fostered the change in facies and the formation of the shallow-water Manaysu member. Subsequently, the transgressive trend appeared again, resulting in the formation of Medved II member. The upper boundary of the Uk Formation corresponds to a major break in the geological record associated with global glaciation.
