Mother Bulb Weight and Plant Density Influence on Seed Yield and Yield Attributes of Onion

Abstract: Bulb weight and plant density affect onion (Allium cepa L.) seed quality. A field experiment was conducted to investigate effects of bulb weight and plant density on yield and yield attributes of onion, cv. Taherpuri, seed. Bulbs with weights of 5 ± 2, 10 ± 2, and 15 ± 2 g, and plant densities of 100, 120, 133, 150, 160, and 200 plants/6 m 2 were used to determine effects. Plant emergence, number of green leaves/plant, umbel diameter, number of flowers/umbel, seed yield/plant, seed yield/plot, and germination … Show more

“…The use of bulbs stored at 10–12 °C is the most widespread method, as it results in a shorter crop cycle as well as a higher and more uniform seed yield [6]. Bulb planting occurs from autumn to spring in Mediterranean areas or from late winter to early spring in northern regions, and, along with bulb density, it is among the major factors greatly affecting the growth and yield of onions [4], as well as seed yield and quality [7,8]. In particular, Ashagrie et al [9] recorded in northern Ethiopia the significant effect of planting time on stalk diameter, seed yield, and germination rate, with the best results corresponding to the earliest planting of 25 October.…”

“…The technology of growing seed plants significantly affects the seed yield. The date of onion cultivation determined the intensity of flowering of the shoots and the quality of the seeds (Khokhar 2008;Khodadadi 2012;Asaduzzaman et al 2015). The yield of onion seeds depends on the size of the phytomass of annual plants.…”

“…Density affects plant architecture, alters growth and developmental patterns and influences carbohydrate production and partitioning. Plant density may influence the development and growth of vegetable crops, including onion (Asaduzzaman et al 2015). The plasticity of plants is the capacity for marked variation in an individual plant phenotype as a result of environmental influences on that genotype during development in which an individual plant can grow larger or smaller depending on the resources available to it in its habitat (Price et al 2003;Dekker 2011).…”
