This study investigated writing errors committed by engineering students at An-Najah National University in Palestine and compared these errors based on school type. It analyzed errors in essays of 54 undergraduate students, 28 attended governmental schools, and 26 attended private schools. Errors were classified based on James's taxonomy. Results showed that both groups faced the same problems when writing in English, as the frequency of committed errors for both groups had the order of morphology, spelling, punctuation, formal, syntactic, semantic and ordering, except for formal errors being higher than punctuation for private school students. The study also concluded that no statistical significant differences were apparent in frequency of errors committed by the two groups. This indicates that private school students do not outperform their governmental school peers in school performance. Such results are necessary for parents and for the Ministry of Education as they oppose the general belief that performance of private school students is better.

This paper investigates and analysis the common interference of mother tongue, were committed by the students who are native of Tamil language, in writing English as a second language. The purpose of this current study is to reveal the common interference of the first language Tamil with its rules and structures in writing ESL. This study was conducted by using the qualitative research method and an essay was taken, from the participants, as a tool of this study . Data were collected from 50 Advanced level students who study at the government schools and these written samples were gathered from the Tamil native students who passed English language in their O/Level examination. The collected data were analyzed and identified the interference of mother tongue,in writing English as a second language, are in punctuation, capitalization, spelling, vocabulary, wrong use of pronoun, word order or sentence structure, preposition, conjunction and adjective. Besides this study will help to our students to develop their writing skills of L2, also to correct them. As well, this article will assist the teachers of ESL to approach the students in learning English as a second language.

First language (L1) interference is inevitable in second language (L2) acquisition. The research was carried out to investigate types of students writing approach that relates to first language interference among upper secondary students and the level of first language interference in L2 written essays among lower secondary students in Malaysia. The participants in this research were 50 students currently studying Form Four in a state-funded school, Akademi Menara Gading, Pahang. The data was collected using the Student L1 Interference Tendency Questionnaire [SLITQ], and analysis of students’ essay writing samples. After triangulating the data, the result indicated that most students positive they have under-differentiation in their essay writing, and analysis of the student's written essays showed that there is less evidence of L1 interference. In conclusion, teachers and schools should acknowledge L1 interference in students’ writing skill and promote a variety of writing strategies to support students existing writing skills.
