“…In our study, however, plasma motilin concentration elevated significantly by the psychological stress in the IBS patients. Because motilin is the only substance known to be active on the gastrointestinal motility during the interdigestive state (Itoh et al 1976) and because it was shown that an infusion of motilin provoked a significant increase in colonic myoelectric and pressure changes (Rennie et al 1980), our results suggest that the interdigestive colonic motor activity under the stress may be at least in part influenced by plasma motilin concentration in the IBS patients. Correlation between motilin and colonic motility in the IBS patients was excessively of interest.…”

“…Motilin, known to act primarily in the upper gut43 but also proposed to stimulate colonic motor activity,44 and CRF were the only peptides that differed between groups. Higher motilin levels were observed in patients, but more interesting were levels of motilin in the IBS subgroups.…”

“…Another effect of motilin in the upper GI tract is to stimulate gallbladder emptying 28 . The role of motilin on colonic motility is less well studied, but there are indications that it has a stimulatory effect on colonic motor activity as well 14,15 …”

“…A stimulatory effect of motilin and erythromycin, a motilin agonist, on colonic motility is supported by some studies, 14,15 whereas other fail to support this assumption 31 . The effects of high motilin levels in IBS patients on the colonic motor pattern are therefore unclear.…”
