Motivation and competence of participants in a learner-centered student-run clinic: an exploratory pilot study

Abstract: BackgroundThe Learner-Centered Student-run Clinic (LC-SRC) was designed to teach and train prescribing skills grounded in a real-life context, to provide students with early clinical experience and responsibility. The current studies’ theoretical framework was based on the Self-determination Theory. “…As shown recently by Schutte et al, a student-run clinic focused on pharmacotherapy education is feasible, valuable, and offers students the opportunity to learn in a real interprofessional setting [23]. Furthermore, students show a high level of intrinsic motivation to participate in these clinics and perceive an improvement in their pharmacotherapy competence [24]. Current knowledge about, and the relationship between, context learning, therapeutic decisionmaking, and clinical practice (6-step approach), is summarized in Fig.…”

“…Studies like that of Rogers, Rogers and Boyd (2013) support the idea of volunteer management in healthcare services, which can be done by expanding volunteering recruitment pools and improving logistics to support volunteers and best match competencies with the roles to be fulfilled. /dx.doi.org/10.15405/epsbs.2019.02.19 Corresponding Author: Roxana Bejan-Muresan Selection and peer-review under responsibility of the Organizing Committee of the conference eISSN: 160 Similar to this result, there are medical studies supporting the idea that gaining professional experience by volunteering might stimulate student motivation (Chen, Sheu, Sullivan, Ten Cate, & Teherani, 2014;Schutte et al, 2017). The "non-response" item reveals that 15% of students have little interest in participating in other activities except for their academic programs.…”
