Background In theory, Motivational Interviewing (MI) fidelity should be associated with client outcomes. Nevertheless, this fidelity-effectiveness association is rarely investigated. This study evaluated the extent to which Telephone Motivational Interviewing (TMI) fidelity is associated with change in self-reported physical activity (PA), fruit intake, and vegetable consumption. Method Adults in primary care (45–70 years) participated in a study that compared the effect of tailor print communication, telephone motivational interviewing (TMI), and a combination of the two on PA, fruit intake, and vegetable consumption. MI fidelity was assessed using the behavioral coding method “Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Code (MITI)” in 409 randomly selected audio-recorded sessions, representing 232 participants of the TMI group. The associations between MI fidelity scores and the behavioral changes from baseline to 47-week follow-up were examined using backward multiple linear regression analyses (adjusted for covariates). Results A significant and positive association between the percentage of MI adherent responses and improvements in PA and fruit consumption was found with respectively a small and medium effect size. The global rating “Spirit” (which resembles an all-at-once appraisal of the interviewer’s MI competence) was significantly, but inversely associated with progress in vegetable intake with a medium effect size. Conclusion The finding that relatively lower MI competency was associated with higher vegetable consumption went against our expectations. Findings suggest that practicing MI-consistent skills was beneficial in promoting PA and fruit consumption, but moderated vegetable intake. This study contributes to the scientific confidence that TMI enables change in PA and fruit intake.

ObjectiveTo examine whether the outcomes of a chat-based suicide-prevention helpline could be improved by training counselors in motivational interviewing (MI).MethodsIn a pre- and post-test design, visitors of a chat-based suicide prevention helpline received either the Five-Phase Model (treatment as usual [TAU]) or MI. They completed a pre- and post-chat questionnaire on several suicide-related risk factors. Linear mixed modeling was used to estimate the effect of the condition. Furthermore, the treatment proficiency of newly trained counselors was assessed using MI-Scope.ResultsA total of 756 visitors and 55 counselors were included in this study. The visitors showed an improvement in suicidal ideation and psychological risk factors after a chat conversation. However, there were no significant differences between the MI and TAU conditions (β = 0.03, 95% CI [−0.23–0.30], p = 0.80). The treatment integrity indices showed that the counselors mostly used MI-consistent techniques but were unable to strategically employ these techniques to evoke enough change talk.ConclusionsMI and TAU led to comparable outcomes in a chat-based suicide prevention helpline. The effectiveness of MI might improve by intensifying or improving the training of counselors, keeping the process of engaging more concise or offering visitors multiple sessions of MI.

Background: Fever is a common problem in ICU patients; it is a medical condition when there is an uncontrolled rise in the body temperature, measured as above 37.5 degrees Celsius. Aim of the study: This study aimed to assess nurse's performance regarding patients with fever at intensive care units. Study design A descriptive exploratory design was used in this study. Setting intensive care units at Nasser General Hospital, affiliated to Ministry of Health. Study subject: A convenience subject of all available nurse's Tools: I Self -administration questionnaire, II nurses' practice observational checklist, III-Nurses' attitude rating scale. Results: revealed that the mean age of the studied nurses were 26.1±4.4, 62.9% of the studied nurse's had satisfactory level of knowledge, there was 75% of them had satisfactory level of practices and 55.7% of nurses under study had positive attitude toward patients with fever at intensive care units. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between attitude and their practices, there is a statistically negative correlation between knowledge and attitude of studied nurses regarding patient with fever at intensive care units. Conclusion: More than two thirds of the studied nurses had satisfactory level of knowledge, three quarter of them had satisfactory level of practices regarding patients with fever at intensive care units, and more than half of the studied nurses had positive attitude toward patients with fever at intensive care units. Also, there is high significant relation between nurses' knowledge, practice & their demographic characteristics. Recommendations: in service training program must be developed based on nurses' need assessment regarding care of patients with fever.
