Motivations and expectations driving community participation in entomological research projects: Target Malaria as a case study in Bana, Western Burkina Faso

Abstract: Background Most field entomology research projects require active participation by local community members. Since 2012, Target Malaria, a not-for-profit research consortium, has been working with residents in the village of Bana, in Western Burkina Faso, in various studies involving mosquito collections, releases and recaptures. The long-term goal of this work is to develop innovative solutions to combat malaria in Africa with the help of mosquito modification technologies. Since the start of the project, Bana… Show more

“…A key element of this approach is conducting adequate risk assessment and obtaining the necessary regulatory approval, which in turn require securing community participation and consent (Delborne et al, 2020). The trials take place in villages where researchers need access to people's houses to collect mosquitoes for post-release monitoring, which necessitates community support and the building of trust between researchers and the local population (Barry et al, 2020). Literacy and education levels in Mali are low, particularly in rural villages, and many people do not know what causes malaria (Marshall et al, 2010).…”

“…Target Malaria, a not-for-profit research consortium striving for innovative solutions to combat malaria in Africa using mosquito modification technologies, released 10,000 genetically modified infertile, male mosquitoes in a rural village in Burkina Faso with approval from the national authorities. Target Malaria's ultimate goal is to reduce transmission in sub-Saharan Africa specifically targeting Anopheles gambiae as major vector of malaria (Barry et al 2020). Information and consent are an essential prerequisite of healthrelated research, motivation, and expectation another important precondition.…”
