Motor imagery on upper extremity function for persons with stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this review was to investigate whether motor imagery training has an effect on the recovery of upper extremity function in individuals with hemiparetic stroke or not. Design: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: PubMed and three other databases were searched up to December 18th, 2018 and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating motor imagery training on upper extremity function in persons with a diagnosis of hemiparetic stroke were included. This review selected the f… Show more

“…Accordingly, two popular rehabilitation techniques that seem to offer some hope for patients with severe impairment in motor function are tasks observation and mental practice, sometimes known as motor imagery [ 6 , 7 ]. Tasks observation is a rehabilitation technique whereby a patient observes physical performance of tasks by a second person with the goal of having the cortical activation that occurred in the brain of the second person during the tasks performance mirrored in similar brain areas of the patient [ 8 , 9 ].…”

“…This mental process triggers the activation of the neurocognitive mechanisms that underlie the planning of voluntary movements resembling how the action is executed in a real way [ 1 ]. Currently, MI has been postulated as a reliable tool to promote motor learning in all of its phases in activities, like the development of professional motor skills learning [ 2 ], improvement of sports gestures [ 3 ], and enhancement of skilled performance in the patient rehabilitation [ 4 , 5 ], among others. In these applications, the Media and Information Literacy methodology proposed by UNESCO includes many competencies that are vital for people to be effectively engaged in human development [ 6 ].…”

“…If there are various independent and dependent variables that are difficult to include in a meta-analyses, it is necessary to perform the analyses separately and review the results; it is believed that the combination of significance tests and index estimates of effect sizes can overcome these difficulties. Future research should include overseas papers on aquatic exercise to reduce the reporting bias [48,49]. In future randomized trials, the categories of experimental variables should be clearly classified, and related guidelines should be established.…”
