Mouseyes revisited: upgrading a computer program that aids wound measurement

Abstract: A computer program (Mouseyes) for measuring wounds has been upgraded to incorporate the use of photographic images taken with a digital camera. This evaluation showed that the upgrade produced accurate and reproducible results.

“…This variable was selected according to recommendations of the National Group for the Study and Assessment of Pressure Ulcers and Chronic Wounds (http://www.gneaupp.org) based on the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) (http://www.npuap.org). 22 The Mouseyes software program (version 2.1) was used to calculate wound areas derived from digital camera image files 23. The percentage of surface area healed was estimated as “initial ulcer surface − final ulcer surface/initial ulcer surface × 100”.…”

“…Some studies have evaluated the computerized planimetry for surface area measurement, and have also reported excellent ICC values ( > 0.90). 24,26,27,[33][34][35] In the literature, wound debridement was studied using objective digital image processing. Oduncu et al 36 quantified the amount of slough in a wound bed using a software package (Hue Saturation Intensity color representation model) compared with a grading system based on visual inspection by an experienced clinician.…”

“…These techniques require sophisticated, expensive and relatively cumbersome instrumentation at the patient's side. With wide availability of digital cameras, a more attractive option is to capture a digital image of the wound for subsequent computerised analysis (44). In effect, this converts a 3D image into 2 dimensions, and single plane photographs are inherently limited by this transformation.…”
