Movement ecology of diploid and triploid grass carp in a large reservoir and upstream tributaries

Abstract: Grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella, is an herbivorous fish originally brought to North America from Asia in 1963 to control nuisance aquatic vegetation. Since their arrival, detrimental alterations to aquatic ecosystems have sometimes occurred in waterways where they were initially stocked and into which they have escaped. The movements of grass carp from lentic systems into tributaries required for spawning is poorly understood, and understanding environmental conditions associated with upstream migrations ma… Show more

“…After the establishment of these populations, the high dispersal ability of megafish species facilitates their spread through the new environments where they have been introduced to. For example, grass carp have travelled over 100 river km in 3 months in their ongoing invasion of North American freshwater ecosystems (Chapman et al., 2013; Embke et al., 2016; Hessler et al., 2023). Muskellunge ( Esox masquinongy ) spread 500 km within 20 years after their introduction to Lac Frontière (Canada) in the 1970s (Zelman et al., 2023).…”
