“…In the North Sea, passive transport of larvae between these spawning areas is probably constrained by the frontal zones between freshwaterinfluenced water masses and the shelf water of the central North Sea (Munk et al 2002). As the maximum recorded dispersal of post-settled sandeels is 64 km (Gauld 1990), the geographical isolation of many aggregations reported here is likely to reflect reproductive isolation. Regional differences in year-class strength are consistent with this proposed pattern of isolation.…”

“…Thus, they are found close to areas of suitable sediment throughout the year. Movements following settlement appear to be rather limited with virtually no dispersal between areas > 30 km apart (Gauld 1990). Sandeels are an important prey of kittiwakes, with predominantly Age 1 and older fish (1+ group) being taken during incubation and young of the year (0 group) during chick rearing (Wright 1996, Lewis et al 2001b.…”

“…Consensus has been reached that after settling individuals show high site fidelity (e.g. Gauld 1990, Pedersen et al 1999.…”

“…NOTE corresponding trends , such that Pacific Sand Lances are rarely found in the water column during winter months. Pacific Sand Lances in this region are known to spawn between December and February in intertidal habitats (Penttila 1995), and Lesser Sand Eels A. marinus can migrate between deep and nearshore waters as a function of season and life stage (Andriyashev 1954;Gauld 1990); however, the lack of differentiation of the size-classes of fish sampled suggest that the increased abundance in the sediments represents a transition from pelagic foraging to benthic dormancy rather than an influx in the return of spawning adults. Additionally, while Ammoydytes species mature at various ages across their range , and size at maturity is not known for the local population (Selleck et al 2015), maturation does not occur until fish exceed 100 mm in length (Boulcott et al 2007).…”
