Moving Forward: Resilience of a Chemistry for Health Professions 2D Virtual Lab Program During COVID

For decades, chemical modeling sets have allowed the user to manipulate atoms and bonds using plastic/wooden ball and stick materials. Here is a design for an interlocking toy brick modeling set in which the undergraduate nursing student can manipulate electrons during the simulated chemical bonding exercise. The author presents a teaching and learning activity/demonstration designed to help undergraduate nursing (BSN) students both visualize and physically manipulate (“handle”) abstract chemical education topics such as valence shell electrons and molarity (with manipulatives for solubility rules) of salts, acids, and bases in a chemistry for health professions didactic course, as an effort to increase comprehension of these chemical education topics. This learning tool was one in a series of newly coined “PERCEIVE” (Preparing Engaging Real-time Chemical Education Interactive and Visual Examples) chemical education demonstrations, where BSN students prepare engaging demonstrations, while working in groups. The preparation (building) step allows students to get a “handle” on how the chemistry concept works. Afterward the newly prepared demonstrations are utilized as examples for chemical education and chemistry in health topicshence, the “PERCEIVE” acronym. This publication outlines: (i) Connections between Molarity and Solubility in modern healthcare practices, (ii) The method and materials for using interlocking toy bricks selected according to CPK color-scheme for modeling valence shell electrons (based on Bohr models), (iii) Solubility rules, (iv) Molarity (and calculations), and (v) Results from anonymous pre- and postqualitative student questionnaires. Student responses indicated a marked increase in the ability to calculate molarity in different volumes (1 L vs 500 mL) postdemonstration. Additional qualitative surveys were conducted, and the results highlighted more than 90% of 152 respondents endorsed the continued implementation of this demo in subsequent chemistry for health professions courses.

Is Chemical Density Important to Nursing Education? A 2D Virtual Lab and a PERCEIVE Demonstration

Chemistry topics are ubiquitous in healthcare diagnostics as well as health professions undergraduate curricula. However, there are limited correlations between chemistry and healthcare made in textbooks or template lecture materials. For undergraduate nursing students (BSN) enrolled in a Chemistry for Health Professions course, the author (and instructor) developed a didactic, digital, interactive, and experiential learning series for the students to explore one chemical topic, density, and examine its importance to nursing education. This article outlines the first of several PERCEIVE (Preparing Engaging Real-time Chemical Education Interactive and Visual Examples) chemical education demonstrations offered to undergraduate nursing students. Following a lecture on chemical density, ≥162 students completed a series of questionnaires on a 2D virtual lab exercise on “Identifying Metals” via their mobile phones and QR codes, then observed an in-class demonstration on “Density in Health”. The respondents highly recommended the in-class PERCEIVE demonstration for future undergraduate health professions courses and noted this added visualization aided in their ability to bridge the two concepts: density and healthcare diagnostics. Additional qualitative survey results for the lab and demonstration are discussed in this manuscript. As to the question, “Is Chemical Density Important to Nursing Education?”, 98.77% of 162 student respondents agreed this concept is an important component of nursing education.

Virtual Reality to Teach Students in Laboratories: A Bibliometric and Network Analysis

The latest developments in virtual reality (VR) are gaining attention in education as they are expected to provide riskfree, hands-on learning experiences. However, the use of VR in laboratory settings is still in its early stages of adoption. Therefore, it remains unclear whether these technologies will be widely adopted to educate students in laboratories, as well as their advantages and disadvantages compared to traditional laboratories. This study aims to map the global scientific publications related to the use of VR for teaching in virtual laboratories. To achieve this, we analyze the global scientific landscape of publications related to the use of VR for teaching students in laboratories. We combined bibliometric and network analysis techniques to analyze the metadata of related research articles published between 1994 and 2022 indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection. Our findings show a rising trend, with almost 65% of all articles published between 2018 and 2022. Leading journals include the Journal of Chemical Education, Computers & Education, and Computers Applications in Engineering Education. Most publications are indexed in the research areas of Education & Educational Research, Computer Science, and Engineering. The United States leads in publications, collaborating mostly with Denmark, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The University of California is the top organization in publications, with Griffith University facilitating knowledge exchange among organizations. By providing an overview of publications related to the use of VR in laboratory education, we hope that this study will be of interest to researchers, educators, and students.
