Moving Forward: Resilience of a Chemistry for Health Professions 2D Virtual Lab Program During COVID

Abstract: Chemical education laboratory practices have not been exempted from the present healthcare crisis. Learning environments have shifted from face-to-face exercises to virtual and video conferencing platforms. Here, we discuss a chemistry for health sciences course which (i) adapted the previous face-to-face laboratory exercises to 100% online using online platforms two years preceding COVID only to shift to completely remote learning and back again and (ii) highlight correlations between chemistry concepts (e.g.… Show more

“…From this context, we gather that molarity and dilutions calculations parallel those of dosages and medication reconstitution. This prompted the implementation of an online virtual chemistry lab protocol in the Chemistry for Health Professions lab course (details of which were published in a 2022 issue of the Journal of Chemical Education ), as well as the PERCEIVE demonstration designed and outlined in this article.…”

“…The 2D virtual lab program offers a variety of simulated empirical exercises and pre/post lab evaluations. The full scope (i.e., course development, example lab protocols, learning outcomes, qualitative student data, and “lessons learned”) of the 2D virtual lab program offered at Loyola University School of Nursing has been recently published in the Journal of Chemical Education . This lab program utilized free online (virtual) lab modules offered by the Chemcollective library of digital laboratory modules, , as well as adapted and designed a common Vernier titration lab into an online lab module .…”

“…Given a few common symptoms of diabetes insipidus include but are not limited to polyuria (higher than normal frequency of urination, passing greater than approximately four liters a day), thirst (due to excessive urination and resulting water loss), and frequent nightly urination, it lends to reason that the USG of a diabetes insipidus patient is closer to ≤ 1.005. A cause of diabetes insipidus may be a hypothalamus tumor, hypothalamic- 33 This lab program utilized free online (virtual) lab modules offered by the Chemcollective library of digital laboratory modules, 34,35 as well as adapted and designed a common Vernier titration lab into an online lab module. 36 The lab is offered as a face-to-face lab in the presence of an instructor within a classroom (or lecture hall).…”

“…6 VR can promote collaborative learning, allowing students to work together in a lab or other virtual space, regardless of their geographic location or time zone, providing a more flexible and efficient means of conducting research and developing teaching and learning activities, 12−14 including efforts to engage science publishing in a variety of informal learning contexts. 15 Another advantage of using VR in education settings is that it provides students with unparalleled opportunities to engage with content, explore complex concepts, and interact with virtual environments. 6 When students are immersed in a virtual environment, they are more likely to retain information presented to them and remain engaged in the learning process.…”
