Moving From Co-Design to Co-Research: Engaging Youth Participation in Guided Qualitative Inquiry

Abstract: The inclusion of community voices in research is important. Over the years, research training programs have continued to emphasize that engagement with communities at the focus of research can promote thoughtful, sensitive designs ( Rivera et al., 2004 ). In this paper, we discuss a method for youth participation in the research process. In an attempt to move beyond “staged and superficial” participation in gathering youth perspectives, we advocate for including co-researchers in the development and modificati… Show more

“…In a PAR project, where co-researchers participate throughout the planning, data collection, data analysis, reflection, and action stages, one of the key ingredients for success is training any co-researchers which will encourage them to participate throughout the whole study-the lay co-researchers need to know the fundamentals of research ethics, design, data collection and analysis (Clark et al, 2022). One of the things that was relatively unique about our setting, and that we had not much contemplated at the outset of our project, was that students in our program within our university all complete a twosemester research course sequence during their first year.…”

“…Notwithstanding this, the young people's input was invaluable and provided a crucial insight on the activities and issues relating to social media, with their opinions largely influencing the data analysis. In this sense, the goal was to position young people as "coresearchers" (Clark et al, 2022) and their views were prioritized and balanced with the academic literature.…”

“…To optimise effectiveness, we have chosen to adopt a participatory research approach, working alongside adolescents using a co-design process. Co-design has been shown to be effective in the development of a diversity of interventions for adolescents (Björling & Rose, 2019; Clark et al, 2022; Dietrich et al, 2017; Koon et al, 2023). This extends to the involvement of teachers in curriculum development (Hundal et al, 2014).…”
