Moving Object Detection Based on Improved ViBe Algorithm

Abstract: In this paper, an improved ViBe background subtraction algorithm is proposed for dealing with ghost problem during the process of moving object detection. The ghost areas in image can be detected based on the theory that the histogram distributions of ghost areas have similarity distribution characteristics. However, the histogram distributions of real moving objects change with the real objects moving. The influence of ghost areas on moving object detection is eliminated. The improved ViBe, the original ViBe … Show more

“…The statistical background model also provides the mechanism which allows the system to adapt to minor changes made in the background. On the other hand, the use of periodical adaptation is employed when there is a need to synchronize lighting with other physical changes that may be made to the background such as the removal or addition of objects in the system [15,16]. Secondly, Background Subtraction: method of adaptive background subtraction refers to the approach that is employed to detect the foreground objects from the n image.…”

“…In order to remove the ghost area in the process of foreground detection, different modified versions of ViBe algorithm have been introduced by other authors. For instance, Bo et al 44 improved ViBe algorithm based on the theory that the histogram distribution characteristics of moving objects are different when a real object is moving. However, the histogram of ghost areas has a correspondence distribution characteristic.…”

“…On the other hand the original ViBe algorithm could easily produce ghost in the process of moving object detection. 44 Ghost described in Cucchiara et al 45 as "a set of connected points detected as in motion by means of background subtraction, but not corresponding to any real moving object. "…”
