Moving towards sustainable environmental development for BRICS: Investigating the asymmetric effect of natural resources on CO2

Abstract: Environmental sustainability has become the most critical global agenda of the 21st century. The Paris Agreement goals to keep the global temperature rise below 2°C compared to the pre‐industrial period. BRICS, which use intensive natural resources, hold regular meetings, and announce policies to comply with the Paris Agreement. This article aims to help BRICS achieve their sustainable development goals. In order to achieve this aim, the relationship between renewable energy consumption, natural resources, and… Show more

“…First, the validity of the WKC hypothesis is confirmed between economic growth/income and MSW. In this context, our findings are compatible with some papers in the literature (Arbulú et al, 2015;Boubellouta & Kusch-Brandt, 2020, 2021Ercolano et al, 2018;Madden et al, 2019;Soukiazis & Proença, 2020) (Caglar et al, 2022;Cerqueira et al, 2021;Mavi & Mavi, 2019;Sun & Razzaq, 2022;Wang et al, 2019;Yoon et al, 2017).…”

“…Economic growth and income growth reduce MSW generation per capita and are sustainable. Environmental innovation efforts, developments in renewable‐clean energy technologies, inclusive environmental regulations and green growth strategies, which have been observed with growth in OECD countries in recent years, are indicators of structural and technical effects (Caglar et al, 2022; Cerqueira et al, 2021; Mavi & Mavi, 2019; Sun & Razzaq, 2022; Wang et al, 2019; Yoon et al, 2017).…”

“…Besides, the technological knowledge levels of the countries significantly affect energy efficiency (Rafique et al, 2022). A high level of technical knowledge provides the opportunity to manufacture more products with less energy consumption (Sohag et al, 2015) which contributes to reducing resource depletion (Birol & Keppler, 2000; Caglar et al, 2022). Moreover, economic complexity may positively impact renewable energy consumption in the developed country group.…”

“…Although the ARDL approach has many advantages, it allows exploring the linear relationship between the variables. When examining the asymmetric impact of the explanatory variable(s) on the dependent variable, the NARDL model introduced by Shin et al (2014) is generally preferred (Adebayo et al, 2021; Caglar, Guloglu, & Gedikli, 2022; Rahman & Ahmad, 2019). NARDL method has superior features besides allowing asymmetric relations.…”
