MPLS Loop Prevention Mechanism

Abstract: This paper presents a simple mechanism, based on "threads", which can be used to prevent Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) from setting up label switched path (LSPs) which have loops. The mechanism is compatible with, but does not require, VC merge. The mechanism can be used with either the ordered downstream-on-demand allocation or ordered downstream allocation. The amount of information that must be passed in a protocol message is tightly bounded (i.e., no pathvector is used). When a node needs to change … Show more

“…Loop Prevention -A loop in an LSP is defined as the LSP traversing a node for more than once [12]. In subpath and link restoration techniques, since the restoration path is identified as part of the original LSP, we have to ensure that these two parts do not overlap with each other at any node.…”

“…Loop prevention was originally set up as one of the requirements that must be fulfilled in MPLS [9]. In A-MPLS, however, we advocate to add a mechanism for the establishment of a special type of ALSPs, called circular LSPs (CLSP), which foim a ring (i.e., a loop).…”
