Abstract. The available bandwidth of a network path impacts the performance of many applications, such as VoIP calls, video streaming and P2P content distribution systems. Several tools for bandwidth estimation have been proposed in the last years but there is still uncertainty in their accuracy and efficiency under different network conditions. Although a number of experimental evaluations have been carried out in order to compare some of these methods, a comprehensive evaluation of all the existing active tools for available bandwidth estimation is still missing. This article introduces an empirical comparison of most of the active estimation tools actually implemented and freely available nowadays. Abing, ASSOLO, DietTopp, IGI, pathChirp, Pathload, PTR, Spruce and Yaz have been compared in a controlled environment and in presence of different sources of cross-traffic. The performance of each tool has been investigated in terms of accuracy, time and traffic injected into the network to perform an estimation.

In this paper, we propose Multi-Rate Bandwidth Available in Real Time (MR-BART) to estimate the end-to-end Available Bandwidth (AB) of a network path. The proposed scheme is an extension of the Bandwidth Available in Real Time (BART) which employs multi-rate (MR) probe packet sequences with Kalman filtering. Comparing to BART, we show that the proposed method is more robust and converges faster than that of BART and achieves a more AB accurate estimation. Furthermore, we analyze the estimation error in MR-BART and obtain analytical formula and empirical expression for the AB estimation error based on the system parameters.Comment: 12 Pages (Two columns), 14 Figures, 4 Tables

Motivated by the problem of limited bandwidth in peer-to-peer (P2P) multi-party video conferencing systems, in this paper we propose a non-intrusive adaptive multi-media routing algorithm that effectively calculates stream routing to achieve a maximum number of receiving streams. The technique is non-intrusive in that it makes use of current streaming status to infer link bottlenecks rather than sending active probing packets, which would seriously interfere with the latency-sensitive video conferencing application and waste bandwidth. When link bottlenecks are detected, the method will adaptively calculate streaming routes, allowing bandwidth abundant peers to act as relays. To test the performance, we use real data from a world wide bandwidth distribution archive and investigate the algorithm convergence rate and distribution fairness through simulation. Results show that the technique works well to achieve effective multi-media routing for latency-sensitive video conferencing applications.
