MR Sialography: Initial Experience Using a T2-Weighted Fast SE Sequence

Abstract: MR sialography is noninvasive and does not depend on duct cannulation or contrast agent injection. Initial experience with a thick slice projection technique indicates that MR sialography can be successfully applied to image the parotid gland ductal system.

“…It is a noninvasive procedure in which normal saliva functions as the contrast medium. The peripheral branches of the duct system are less visible on MR images than on x-ray sialography (19,21) because of the lower spatial resolution. The manual injection of contrast medium into the salivary ducts used in x-ray sialography may also influence the results, because it may cause artificial dilatation of the duct system (21).…”

“…MR sialography has been performed using various sequences including rapid acquisition with relaxation enhancement [8,16], turbo spin echo [17][18][19][20], half Fourier acquisition singleshot turbo spin echo [21], gradient and spin echo [22], constructive interference in steady state [16], and threedimensional extended-phase conjugate-symmetry rapid spinecho [10] pulse sequences. However, the earlier single-slice sequences [8,16,17] had a long acquisition time and created limited resolution images.…”

“…However, the earlier single-slice sequences [8,16,17] had a long acquisition time and created limited resolution images. Moreover, the multislice sequences along with maximum intensity projection reconstruction [10,18,19,21,22] were beneficial for obtaining high-resolution images but required a long acquisition time.…”

“…Die MR-Untersuchung erfolgte an einem 1,0-Tesla-Ganzkörpermagnetreso-nanztomographen (Gyroscan T10NT; Philips, Best, NL) in der bereits andernorts publizierten Technik [5]. Unter Verwendung einer zirkulären Oberflächen-spule (Durchmesser: 7,5 cm) wurden zunächst hochauflösende transversale und koronare T1-und T2-gewichtete Schichtbilder der Parotis erstellt.…”
