“…One of the major reasons for the rapid accumulation of bacterial strains displaying multidrug resistance is inappropriate prescription and dosage of therapeutic antibiotics (Rios et al, 2016), resulting in over‐usage. Bacteria can develop antibiotic resistance via several mechanisms, including: (1) enhanced multidrug efflux pump activity on the membrane (Leski & Tomasz, 2005); (2) expression of enzymes that effectively inactivate antimicrobial drugs (Rouveix, 2007); (3) reduced antibiotic uptake; and (4) modification of antimicrobial drug or their targets (Rios et al, 2016; Romanelli et al, 2010).
