According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the transportation sector is responsible for almost 23% of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, electric vehicles (EVs) may play a critical role in achieving the environmental objectives of the Paris agreement that strengthens the global response to the threat of climate change. National Renewable Energy Labs (NREL) and International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) predict that there will be more than 3 million EVs roaming the U.S. highways by 2025 [1][2].Design and construction of EV charging stations using zero-emission photovoltaic (PV) solar panels are expected to positively impact environmentally friendly efforts on reducing carbon footprints specifically in metropolitan areas. This applied research paper reports efforts of engineering technology faculty and students to design and build a sustainable charging station that is fully sponsored by an energy services company. Department of Engineering Technology's multidisciplinary faculty, technician, and students with the logistic support from Academic Community Engagement (ACE) staff at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) secured a grant from Entergy Energy Company's Environmental Initiative Funding (EIF) to design and build a 50 kW PV-based EV fast DC charging station in the City of Huntsville's welcome center with an opportunity to provide sustainability and engineering showcase with the community. A group of students from electrical, electronics, mechanical, engineering design, and construction engineering technology programs in the Department of Engineering Technology are working in the project as part of their senior design project assignment during 2021-2022 academic year. In addition to ABET defined course objectives, goals and outcomes, senior design projects in the engineering and technology curriculum also serve as unique bridges between the academia and the communities. This paper reports a multi-group senior design project progress to design and construct a 50 kW solar array power system during the semesters of spring and summer 2022. The project will provide one fast DC charging station. The proposed PV array includes 120 panels with a rated power of 420 W, that is manufactured in the U.S. The PV power system will be connected to the grid with a 50-kW grid-tied inverter to provide reliable and resilient electricity. Faculty and students working in the project are responsible to design and install overall system equipment including utility scale concrete-ballasted ground mounts for 120 PV panels, balance of system units, charge controllers, LED light fixtures for night vision, the protection and measurement components, related combiners, and junction boxes. The 50 kW array includes 12 parallelconnected PV strings, each string containing 12 PVs connected in series which will provide an expected total voltage of 480 V DC and a total current of 125A DC to be connected to a threephase grid-tied inverter. The Sustainability is the intent to provide the best outcomes for the human and natural environments both now and indefinite future. The Sustainability relates to the continuity of economic, social, institutional and environmental aspects of human society, as well as the nonhuman environment. The Cosmos Foundation, a non-profit educational organization with 19 campuses and more than 7000 students all over the Texas took an initiative tour toward global awareness. The Cosmos foundation organizes an annual transformative International Science Fair Olympiad called I-SWEEEP (International Sustainable World Energy Engineering & Environment Project Olympiad) since 2008. The Cosmos Foundation brings the best and brightest students from all over the world to Houston, Texas to demonstrate their selected research findings. This paper describes how this Olympiad engages young minds in a search for solutions to the environmental and energy related challenges of today in hopes of achieving a sustainable world for tomorrow. The I-SWEEEP stimulates students' interest in practical solutions and cultivates the future of the energy frontier through unique projects. The mission of I-SWEEEP is to create a collaborative yet competitive environment in which students can present their innovative ideas/projects to solve today's challenges in energy, engineering, and environment, which will ensure a sustainable world for tomorrow. All the judges for the project evaluations are selected from academia and industrial professionals. The judging process gives a good opportunity to engineering professionals and academicians to review and evaluate what prospective engineers have developed for a sustainable future. The I-SWEEEP promotes engineering inventions and energy efficiency/management discoveries, which nurture ecofriendly technology concepts in K-12 STEM education.

This applied research paper reports efforts of engineering technology faculty and students to design and build a sustainable charging station that is fully sponsored by an energy services company. The objective of this project is to install a 33.6 kW solar array on Sam Houston State University's (SHSU) campus and connect it to a university owned substation by a 50 kW capacity grid-tie inverter. A Charge-Point Express 250 DC fast charger will also be installed on the SHSU campus near the PhotoVoltaics (PV) array to charge electric vehicles (EV). The project also includes an outdoor educational display describing how the system operates, and offsets carbon emissions providing environmental savings on campus. The project provides a multitude of benefits by placing an EV fast charger on campus with it being convenient for the citizens of Huntsville, TX and electric vehicle drivers that are traveling between Houston and Dallas, TX. It will also showcase to the SHSU community the increasing importance of renewable energy resources and display an example of how clean power is generated. We are promoting more sustainable operations of the university using renewable energy systems by designing a unique PV based EV fastcharging station due to lack of locations where EV owners can charge their vehicles. It will also introduce a cleaner form of energy that will help reduce the overall cost of the charger. The initial requirement of the project was to install 120 PV panels with a total capacity of 50 kW. Due to an increase in cost during the preparation phase of the project, this had to be reduced to 80 PV panels with a capacity of 33.6 kW.
