Mucinous carcinoma of the gallbladder with signet ring cells

Abstract: Most gallbladder carcinomas are adenocarcinomas, of which mucinous carcinoma (MC) is a rare pathologic subtype. Signet ring cells are seldom found in MCs. We report an extremely rare case of gallbladder MC with signet ring cells. This is the first radiological case report about this rare type of histologic entity with detailed discussion of imaging findings in the English literature. In addition to the features of MC, linitis plastica-like invasion, which is the key feature of signet ring cells, was confirmed … Show more

“…Magnetic resonance imaging shows the lesions to be hypointense on T1WI and heterogeneously hyperintense on T2WI. Thus, the imaging features of MC, which shows an attenuation similar to bile and poor enhancement, may delay the diagnosis and lead to underestimation of tumour extent and stage . Hence, a pathological diagnosis is utmost important in guiding the patient management.…”

“…1 Literature on MCGB is rare. Other than the comprehensive study by Dursun et al, most are case reports, 7 mainly describing the radiological features [8][9][10] or association with other histological variants or diseases. [11][12][13] There are no studies available in the literature describing the cytology of MCGB in detail.…”

“…Gallbladder cancer is the most frequent cancer of the biliary system. The risk factors for the development of gallbladder cancer include long-standing gallstone disease, porcelain gallbladder, choledochal cyst, and ethnicity [ 1 - 3 ]. It is often detected in the advanced stages and is associated with poor prognosis.…”

“…Gall bladder carcinoma is the most common type of tumor of the biliary tract and adenocarcinoma is the major histopathological subtype. Mucinous variant is a rare subtype and mucinous carcinoma (MC) accompanied with signet ring is extremely rare (2). When mucinous component exceeds 90% of the tumor, it is labeled as pure mucinous carcinoma (3).…”
