“…Until 1996, IPMTs were described in case reports and in small series under various names including mucinous ductal ectasia [3], intraductal papillary hyperplasia [4], villous adenoma [5], intraductal cystadenoma [6], mucinous pancreatic tumor [7], intraductal papillary neoplasm [8], ductectatic mucinous cystadenoma and adenocarcinoma [9], mucin-producing carcinoma [10], intraductal papillary adenocarcinoma [11], and adenocarcinoma with a predominant intraductal component [12]. A pathognomonic sign for an IPMT is mucinous secretion through the papilla of Vater that can be observed endoscopically.…”

“…Most IPMTs are found in men in their sixth or seventh decade of life and are located in the pancreatic head, whereas mucinous cystic tumors are usually found in middle-aged women and located in the body and tail of the pancreas. [3][4][5] According to our MEDLINE and Japana Centra Revuo Medicina search, only two reports of IPMT of the pancreas in a young patient have been documented. 11,12 Infrequent presentations such as the one we described in this report can serve to clarify the epidemiology of IPMT, since it is still unknown whether they are in fact anecdotal or the result of the increased awareness of clinicians and better imaging modalities.…”

“…4 To the best of our knowledge, only one other case of IPMT in a patient younger than 30 years old has ever been reported. 5 Whether this reflects a true epidemiological feature or the inability of clinicians to diagnose these tumors in earlier stages is still unknown. We report this case of IPMT in a young man for two reasons: first, to contribute to a better understanding of the epidemiology of IPMTs, and second, to update the appropriate management with the aid of modern technology.…”

“…Although multiple loculations and peripheral calcification have been described as features of neoplasia 1 even CT may be unreliable in distinguishing neoplasia from pseudocyst, serous from mucinous tumour or benign from malignant with sensitivity rates of 28–95% being reported in various study series 5 . Communication between the pancreatic duct and cystic cavity at ERCP has been reported in only one case of cystic neoplasm 6 . Demonstration of mucus in the pancreatic duct has also been reported 6 but is a feature of mucinous ductal ectasia as distinct from mucinous cystic neoplasia.…”
