Mucoadhesive Chitosan Microspheres of Gefitinib

Abstract: Objective: Gefitinib, Epidermal Growth Factor-Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor (EGFR-TKI); has promisingly shown activity against Non-Small-Scale Lung Cancer. Currently, the formulations of this drug available are in Tablets, Capsules and liposomal suspensions taken by the oral route. These have certain disadvantages in gastrointestinal disorders like irritation of GI mucosal layer, bleeding, non-patient compliance and low bioavailability due to low aqueous solubility and thus low bioavailability. The purpose of this… Show more

“…[7][8][9][10] In this context, pharmaceutical researchers are playing a crucial role in facilitating this transition, exploiting the contribution of technological improvements to harmonize the efficiency and the sustainability of the personalized approach in the healthcare system. [11,12] In fact, in these years, several production technologies that could fulfil a large variety of patients requirements, multitherapy combination and/or controlled drug release, have been investigated. [13,14] Among these, 3D printing technologies are considered a very attractive production approach for the improvement of products personalization.…”

“…Besides, it also enhances the paracellular absorption by opening the tight junctions between the epithelial cells [11]. Chitosan, being cationic in nature interacts electrostatically with negatively charged sialic acid moieties on the mucosal membrane, is responsible for its mucoadhesive property [12]. The nanoparticles based formulation provides drug release specifically to the site with improved absorption and activity.…”
