Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Breast Found during Treatment of Lymphoma

Abstract: A 71-year-old woman, previously treated for malignant lymphoma, was admitted to our hospital with a tumor in the right breast. The tumor size was 2.0 cm in diameter, and the borderline was unclear. The core needle biopsy material revealed an invasive adenocarcinoma with metaplastic change. Right mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy was performed. Histologically, the tumor was composed of mucus-secreting, epidermoid, and intermediate cells. These findings confirmed the diagnosis as mucoepidermoid carcinoma… Show more

“…MG in 6 cases showed a well-defined or ill-defined mass with an oval, lobulated, or irregular shape. Only 1 of these involved coarse calcification in the mass on MG. [ 7 ] US examinations in 8 cases showed a solid or complex echoic mass. Five cases of low-grade MEC showed a complex echoic mass with various amounts of anechoic areas representing internal cystic components and 2 cases of intermediate-grade MECs showed a heterogeneous echoic solid mass without internal cystic portion.…”

“…Five cases of low-grade MEC showed a complex echoic mass with various amounts of anechoic areas representing internal cystic components and 2 cases of intermediate-grade MECs showed a heterogeneous echoic solid mass without internal cystic portion. [ 7 ] Only 3 cases involved MRI examinations. [ 4 , 7 ] On MRI, 1 case of low-grade MEC showed an enhancing mass with some areas of high signal intensity on the T2-weighted image, representing cystic components, [ 18 ] and 2 cases of intermediate-grade MEC (including our case) showed a heterogeneously enhancing mass without an internal cystic component.…”

“…In a recent review, Ye et al identified 42 cases of breast MEC published from 1979 when Patchefsky et al first described this tumour type in the breast [ 115 ], of which 19 were classified as low grade, 3 as intermediate grade, 17 as high and 3 had no grade reported. Their table has been completed with treatment information and used to summarize the low and intermediate grade cases ( Supplementary Table S5 ) [ 109 , 111 , 115 , 116 , 117 , 118 , 119 , 120 , 121 , 122 , 123 ]. In the non-high grade MEC group, 7 patients had BCS (6 low grade and 1 with intermediate grade) and 16 had mastectomy (13 low grade and 3 intermediate grade) [ 108 ].…”

“…Salivary gland neoplasms trend toward malignancy as their size decreases. MEC is not exclusive to the major and minor salivary glands, and can be seen in other areas such as the breast 2. Additionally, MEC can be found as a primarily intraosseous lesion, making up 2%–3% of head and neck MEC, with less than 200 cases reported since 1939 3.…”
