Mucoepidermoid lung carcinoma in a pediatric patient confused with pneumonia

Abstract: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is a common type of salivary gland malignancy; however, rarely, MEC can arise from the lung. This disease has a non-specific presentation and is often overlooked. Histologically, MEC can be classified into low-grade and high-grade forms. Surgical resection is the optimal treatment for low-grade tumors. In this article, we report a case of MEC in a 5-year-old girl who was initially misdiagnosed with pneumonia. The histological results revealed MEC. Thus, clinicians and radiologist… Show more

“…Recognizing the functions of radiography, CT 16 and 18 F-FDG PET in the evaluation of pulmonary masses in children, may lead to the routine use of 18 F-FDG PET in confirming suspected cases of MEC in pediatric patients, resulting in earlier diagnoses, more accurate staging, and better patient outcomes. However, caution should be exercised to differentiate malignant from benign lesions because of the frequency of false-positive results in active inflammatory foci and false-negative results in small malignant lesions 7 .…”

“…Distant metastases is rare [ 5 ] but lymph node metastasis has been reported, prompting the need for chemotherapy [ 12 ]. One of our patients had radiotherapy to the local area because his tumour was high grade.…”
