Mucus extravasation and retention phenomena: a 24-year study

Abstract: BackgroundMucoceles are benign lesions related to the minor salivary glands and their respective ducts frequently affecting oral structures which are generally asymptomatic. Mucoceles are generally characterized by swollen nodular lesions preferentially located on the lower lip and differ from the so-called ranulas, which are lesions located on the floor of the mouth and related to the sublingual or submandibular glands.MethodsThe objective of the present study was to analyze data such as age, gender, race and… Show more

“…It usually occurs as a result of epithelial proliferation of a partially or completely obstructed salivary duct [12]. Obstruction of salivary glands commonly occurs due to mucin plugs around which there is calcification gradually resulting in a sialolith.…”

“…Adolescents and children are more commonly affected than adults. [6] Lesions may fluctuate in size because of mucosal rupture over the pooled mucin. Continued production of mucin leads to recurrence.…”

“…Salivary gland tumors are relatively uncommon and account for approximately [3][4][5][6] percentage of all neoplasms of the head and neck. [1] Tumors of salivary glands usually occur in the major salivary glands but a small percentage occur in the minor salivary glands too.…”

“…However, children and young adults are more susceptible. [2,[7][8][9] Two mechanisms for development of this lesion have been suggested like mucous extravasation and mucous retention. Most mucoceles are of the extravasation type, caused by trauma to the salivary glands, biting the lip tongue or cheek.…”

“…[6,9] Clinically, mucocele are characterized by a single, well defi ned round or oval shape, a sessile nodular lesion varying from few millimeters to approximately 1 cm in diameter. [1,2,[7][8][9] Literature shows small number of reported cases of mucoceles in Indian pediatric patients. The aim of this article is to present information regarding 13 mucoceles in 13 patients and to describe their clinical characteristics, associated etiology, and treatment rendered.…”
