Multi-agent preemptive longest queue first system to manage the crossing of emergency vehicles at interrupted intersections

Abstract: Favouring the crossing of Emergency Vehicles (EVs) through intersections in urban cities is very critical for people lives. There have been several efforts toward developing Traffic Signal Control Systems (TSCS) dedicated to control efficiently the traffic flow, but few are the efforts toward developing Traffic Signal Priority Systems (TSPS) dedicated to favour the crossing of EVs (such as ambulances, firefighters, police cars, etc.). Multi-Agent Systems were considered to develop several distributed TSCS, whi… Show more

“…An emergency vehicle preemptive optimization control system is designed, including monitoring subsystem, phase time determination subsystem, and phase switching control subsystem. Louati et al propose a method [ 70 ] that facilitates the passage of emergency vehicles through urban intersections. They rely on preemptive technology and multi-agent systems.…”

“…It also considers the emergency vehicle presence in green phase time adjustment and assists for quick emergency vehicle passing. A multiagent preemptive longest queue first system has been proposed in [26] to handle the emergency vehicle crossings at interrupted intersections. Further, an efficient preemption strategy is selected to diminish the negative impact of preemption on general traffic in [27].…”

“…Most of the signal preemption strategies are focused on isolated intersections. This kind of signal preemption strategy, which is based on local detection and clears the intersection one by one, can start only after an EV is detected and usually leads to inevitable intersection delay [5][6][7]. Moreover, when multiple signal preemptions are implemented during the peak period, the queue and delay of general traffic in the network will be negatively affected [8].…”
