Evaluation of the research management literature identified key issues relevant for managing academic interdisciplinary research projects. Based on these issues, a nationwide survey of American academic interdisciplinary research projects was made to determine the extent and form of these literature issues in practice. Similarities and differences between literature claims and research findings are presented, together with comparisons between academic interdisciplinary research and other forms of group research. The literature most frequently and persistently reports on problems associated with interdisciplinary research in five areas: communication, supervision, university structure, external constraints, and intra-project conflict. These areas are not mutually exclusive sets but represent general areas of literature focus with many interrelationships such as between communication and conflict.
CommunicationBy far the most frequent and persistent issue raised in the literature concerning interdisciplinary research is the problem of communication between project members who are trained in different fields. have all discussed aspects of the communication problem within heterogeneous research teams. Most have discussed the extended length of time required for effective communication to take place in these, as opposed to more homogeneous teams. The extended time for communication is usually argued to be due to differences in terminology, levels of analysis, precision of measurement, and different stages of paradigm development.
