Selection of suitable areas for urban development is a complex process and needs many diverse indications on the basis of which decision may be assumed. The aim of this study is to examine the GISbased land-use suitability analysis and its application in urban planning decision making, using Bendigo, a regional city in Victoria as a case study. The objective of this study is to provide evidencebased solutions to urban growth management issues in regional Victoria. Bendigo is a major regional municipality of Victoria, including Bendigo city and surrounding rural hinterland, with six smaller townships scattered across the region. Greater Bendigo boasts of large areas of national parks, reserves and bushland, as well as agriculture land, which is the major land use of the area. This region has been earmarked by the Victorian Government's Initiative Urban Development Plan for future development as one of Victoria's regional centres for increased development and new homes. Geophysical, socioeconomic and cultural data are used to assess future urban growth suitability in Bendigo based on key goals such as Connected and Compact City (transport and connectivity), City of Equality (education, health services), Ecological City (environmental conservation), and Safe City (risk of disasters). The resultant suitability map indicates primary suitable lands for future urban growth are located adjacent to the established urban areas. Reflecting the current urban development in Bendigo, the paper concludes with several recommendations aimed at improving the long-term urban development plans for the Greater Bendigo area.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> It is critical to develop urban layers for analysis sustainable urban development possibilities within planning process. Kyrenia Region has many physical, environmental or economic issues that may danger the growth possibilities in sustainable manner. From this point, this study uses different spatial layers such as slope, distance to roads, distance to central zone, vegetation, soil productivity, environmental protection zones, distance to open/green space, distance to education for supporting sustainable urban growth policies and define suitable areas for urban development within this perspective. The study tries to convert sustainable urban growth policies such as; compact growth, environmental protection, equal accessibility to basic services; into spatial layers and establish proper framework for multi criteria evaluation in Kyrenia Region within using geographical information systems. It shows suitability values for Kyrenia region and constraints zones at final section. It clearly presents the suitable areas for the sustainable urbanization and also unsuitable or risky areas for reducing the possible disasters and may happen in the future.</p>

Nowadays, there is an increasing concern about sustainable urban energy development taking into account national priorities of each city. Many cities have started to define future strategies and plans to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Urban energy scenarios involve the consideration of a wide range of conflicting criteria, both socio-economic and environmental ones. Moreover, decision-makers (DMs) require proper tools that can support their choices in a context of multiple stakeholders and a long-term perspective. In this context, Multicriteria Spatial Decision Support Systems (MC-SDSS) are often used in order to define and analyze urban scenarios since they support the comparison of different solutions, based on a combination of multiple factors. The main problem, in relation to urban energy retrofitting scenarios, is the lack of appropriate knowledge and evaluation criteria. The latter are crucial for delivering and assessing urban energy scenarios through a MC-SDSS tool. The main goal of this paper is to analyze and test two different methods for the definition and ranking of the evaluation criteria. More specifically, the paper presents an on-going research study related to the development of a MC-SDSS tool able to identify and evaluate alternative energy urban scenarios in a long-term period perspective. This study refers to two Smart City and Communities research projects, namely: DIMMER (District Information Modeling and Management for Energy Reduction) and EEB (Zero Energy Buildings in Smart Urban Districts).
