Multi Criteria and Landfill Site Selection Using Gis: A Case Study From Palestine~!2010-01-01~!2010-01-24~!2010-03-19~!

Abstract: Shortage of land for waste disposal and inappropriate landfill site is one of the biggest problems in most of large urban areas. Therefore more efforts are needed to overcome this problem. Most of the landfill sites in Palestine are selected randomly, and waste is burned and not treated, which impacts nature and human. The main aim of this research is to determine a suitable landfill site with less impact on environment. In this research, a potential site for an appropriate landfill area for Ramallah Governora… Show more

“…There are three steps involved for a SSP approach: (i) create vulnerability map with various factors, (ii) create P map and I map to apply the equation of Pts map, and (iii) GIS software locates the best sites. Mahamid and Thawaba [31] used GIS to solve landfill site selection problem in Palestine. Also, Mendas and Delali [32] applied GIS to develop land suitability maps for agriculture.…”

“…Gorsevski et al [23] have used multicriteria decision method based on geographical information system (GIS) for landfill site selection. Mahamid and Thawaba [24] also utilized (GIS) tool to find proper landfill site considering environmental factors. In this research, GIS tool will be utilized to find an appropriate site for treatment, recycling, and disposal centers based on some important criteria.…”

“…Among them, Vatalis and Manoliadis (2002) and Kontos et al (2005) have done separate studies using GIS and the multi-criteria analysis method to find the best landfill in Macedonia in the northwest of Greece and Lemnos Island in the north of the Aegean Sea, respectively Furthermore, Delgado et al (2008) have used the Boolean method and hierarchical analysis to support landfill site selection, and they also have determined the most suitable location in the watershed of Quitzo Lake in Mexico City by emerging overlapping methods in GIS software. Mahamid and Thawaba (2010), in a study on landfill site selection by GIS in Palestine, have claimed that the most proper landfill, based on an environmental criterion, is forest fields with clay texture and slope of less than 5%. DeFeo and DeGisi (2014) used a combination of the multi-criteria decision-making analysis method and GIS to select landfill sites in the south of Italy.…”
